How dare you challenge me.
I just remembered I'd got a beer in the house and I was sitting here drinking coffee like a sap.
So, I've just cracked open a bottle of Austrian Amber Ale - a little organic number that I swear can make you immortal.
I suppose you are wondering what I was doing before writing this Thoreau-inspired tome of slackness.
Watching Disney+ Wu-Tang: An American Saga. That's what. And it's fucking real, man.
The RZA, the GZA, Ol' Dirty Bastard - Wu-Tang Clan!
I first came across these boys because they did some tracks for one of my all-time great films "Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai." About a Zen-style guy played by Forest Whitaker, pictured above. He's a semi-retired assassin who's got a pledge to a local mobster and then gets embroiled in a load of tension and finds himself behind a gun again dishing out some heavy judgment.
His way is of the Hagakure (In the Shadow of Leaves) The code of the Samurai, which has classic lines such as:
Even if one's head were to be suddenly cut off, he should be able to do one more action with certainty.
Young Lord, Raise your Swords!
One decision made with precision...
And these guys used to enjoy watching old Chinese and Japanese martial arts movies. And seeing them sit around the TV watching these badly-dubbed classics reminded me of my own life around fifteen years ago.
Me and the boys from the Aikido club used to pile into my house with beers and crisps while I made the finest cheese & onion cobs known to man, and we'd sit down for a few hours of Bushido magic.
Golden days.
And we all moved away. I made one decision to jack it all in and head out to Lederhosen land. WTF? But it got me two great kids. The lights of my life. I'm sitting here now in a strange land like a recluse. I go out shopping, I take my kids to the park. And the rest of the time I sit in the shadows like a Ghost Dog. A semi-retired assassin of fuck all. The katana lost its sharpness. Out of the killa bees swarm for too long.
But dudes it's okay. I have other subjects of mellowness. Music. Stillness. Mastering Sofa-do, the Dudeist art of reclining.
And the RZA wrote a book about Tao. The Tao of Wu - just sharing the goodness.
So, I'm partway through that. I'm also listening to an audiobook by J'Dilla. The RZA and J'Dilla could make a deadman dance.
Funnily enough, hip hop was my thing when I was 16 and breakdancing to White Lines, Grand Master Melle Mel - look that up, I can't be arsed with more links. But since then, I'm more of a rock dude. But the RZA and J'Dilla - golden.
So, that's it, my dear dude. I've shared some rocks tonight. Now I'm finishing my beer and watching some Wu-Tang clan!
